‘Spitfire Grill’ production opens Friday at MOVP
MARIETTA — Something’s cooking at the Mid-Ohio Valley Players where “The Spitfire Grill” opens 8 p.m. Friday at the Players Theatre, 229 Putnam St., Marietta.
The show is about Percy Talbot who has just been released from a five-year prison sentence.
She is trying to find a place for a fresh start and travels to the small town of Gilead, Wis., where she finds a job at Hannah’s Spitfire Grill, the only eatery in this struggling town.
The Spitfire Grill is for sale, but with no interested buyers, Hannah decides to raffle it off with an entry fee of $100 and the best essay on why they want the grill is the winner.
Soon, mail is arriving by the wheelbarrow and things are getting hot at the Spitfire Grill.
The musical is an inspiring celebration of the power of what one person can do.
The show is directed by Jeff Walker. Musical director is Peter Sour.
Karen Gessner Parlett plays the independent Hannah, owner of the Spitfire Grill.
“She is a bit grumpy and has a guilty secret which is revealed during the play,” Parlett said.
“I love how she is influenced for the good by the young women who work for her and how Percy and Shelby become family.”
Nathaniel Maciag, who steps into the role of Sheriff Joe Sutter, thinks one song in particular, “Come Alive Again,” has the best message of the show.
“The melodies and harmonies pair beautifully together and the arc of the song encapsulates the optimism and revitalization of Gilead,” Maciag said. “I think this is an especially impactful message as it can be applied to any small town, even Marietta.”
Morgan Maciag plays the lead role of Percy and thinks people will want to see the show because it is feel-good.
“While big, exciting adventure and peril is fun, the soft subtlety of the play is fulfilling and heartwarming, which is something most of us could use, given the tough times we have been and are going through,” she said.
“The Spitfire Grill” runs 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Jan. 28 and 29 and 3 p.m. Sunday and Jan. 30. The Jan. 30 show is a mask-required performance for everyone in the audience.
