Honest Abe’s playlist at the next Civil War Roundtable
A program about the music enjoyed by one of America’s greatest presidents will be presented at the Civil War Roundtable of the Mid-Ohio Valley at 7 p.m. Nov. 21 at the First Congregational Church, 318 Front St., Marietta.
“The Music of Abraham Lincoln” by historian and musician Steve Ball of Columbus will feature the favorite music of President Abraham Lincoln, a music lover whose interests included nearly all forms of music popular during his lifetime.
The presentation will include the music of Ward Hill Lamon and Carl Shurz, who performed for Lincoln at the White House, and minstrel tunes, melancholy ballads and other popular songs of the Civil War period that were favorites at White House events. Ball’s narrative will use wit and humor to provide perspective of the period and the role music filled during the era.
Ball is a musician who specializes in the music of the American Civil War. He has studied the Civil War since he was a teen and has devoted the past three decades to the music of the era.
He has performed at the Ohio Statehouse, the National Civil War Museum, Gettysburg National Military Park Visitors Center, the American Civil War Museum of Ohio and for historical and genealogical societies, libraries, museums, symposiums and organizations throughout the Midwest. Ball has produced two CD’s and is an instructor in the LifeLong Learning program at Central Ohio Technical College.
Ball is department commander of the Ohio Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and a member of the American Battlefield Trust.
A collector of vintage instruments, Ball has a collection of Civil War-era Martin guitars and banjos he uses in his performances.
The presentation, free and open to the public, is financed in part by a matching grant from the Ohio Arts Council. Donations will be accepted to defray a portion of the cost of the event.
