The Washington County Board of Elections has shared information about how it will handle a tie vote for a New Matamoras Sunday liquor sales question and its official canvass of the votes.

The board will start its canvass of the votes at 8 a.m. Nov. 12., according to Board of Elections Director Mandi Amos.

A 156-156 tie vote for whether Par Mar Store 4, located at 1300 State Route 7, Matamoras, can sell alcohol on Sundays will first need any provisional ballots or absentee ballots associated with it counted during the canvass, according to Amos.

She said these ballots could change the vote totals, but if there is still a tie after this, the board will select the winner randomly by chance through a coin toss or other means, and then would perform a recount.

Recounts happen if the results of a vote for an issue or candidate are less than .5% (one half of one percent) difference, according to Amos.

The amount of time the canvass will take will depend on how many provisional ballots the board of elections has to deal with. She said they have 700 provisional ballots to go through.

“This one we have a lot,” she said.

The board will review them and vote on which ones to count. A provisional ballot must be postmarked by Nov. 4 and received in the mail by Saturday to be counted.

Amos previously told The Times that provisional ballots are ballots that have not been processed yet because they have an issue like a voter hasn’t updated their address or name with the Board of Elections or the voter went to their polling location without the required form of ID or a voter is registered to vote in one county and moved and didn’t update their voter registration.

As of Tuesday night there were also 273 absentee ballots still not received by the board of elections. Amos said they received 16 in the mail as of around noon on Wednesday.

People with absentee ballots or provisional ballots that have issues have until Saturday to fix the issues, or cure their ballots.

Amos did not have information as of press time about how many provisional ballots need to be cured or what issues were causing them to need to be cured.

Starting at $2.99/week.
