PARKERSBURG — The cause of a fire remains undetermined, but accidental in nature, that killed a woman Sunday night in a residence on Hill Street, officials said on Monday.

The 600 block of Hill Street is in the service area of the East Wood Volunteer Fire Department that received the call shortly before 6:30 p.m. Sunday that flames were showing from the residence, East Wood Capt. Cliff Buckley said.

Flames were showing at the front of the single-story frame house, he said. The house also had a full basement, Buckley said.

“It spread through the house fairly quick,” he said.

The unidentified 65-year-old woman who died in the fire had mobility issues, Buckley said. The body was taken to the state medical examiner in Charleston, he said.

“She was not very ambulatory,” Buckley said.

Firefighters also returned to the home Monday morning when the fire rekindled from a hot spot in the area behind the refrigerator, Buckley said.

East Wood Fire Chief Ron Utt said the woman became trapped inside. When crews arrived the house was fully involved, he said.

No other injuries were reported, Utt said.

The cause of the fire was undetermined, but believed to be accidental, according to the office of the West Virginia State Fire Marshal.

Deputy sheriffs were the first to arrive, Buckley said. East Wood had 13 firefighters from the department at the fire, Utt said.

Other responding departments were the Waverly and Mineral Wells volunteer fire companies, Vienna Volunteer Fire Department with air bottles, ambulances from Camden Clark Medical Center, the Wood County Fire Investigation Team and a fire marshal.
