Smoot sets first Winter Lecture Series schedule
PARKERSBURG — The Smoot Theatre has announced its first Winter Lecture Series of topics of local and statewide interest.
Three lectures will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 2, Feb. 23 and March 2 in in Wakley Hall next to the theater on Fifth Street in downtown Parkersburg.
Seating will be limited. Cost is $10 adults, $5 students and refreshments will be served.
Reservations are required. Tickets are available at smoottheatre.com.
Each lecture is a topic that should be interesting, not only to Parkersburgers, but also to West Virginians.
The schedule is:
¯Feb. 2: Steppin’ Out: Parkersburg’s “Stage Performance” Theaters
Presented by Julia Lee, the lecture will discuss theaters of the past as they once looked, some dating back into the 19th century. Lee was a theater teacher at Parkersburg South High School who became involved with the arts at the state level.
¯ Feb. 23: Prelude to the Revolution (in West Virginia): 1730’s -1760’s.
As the nation begins to celebrate the semiquincentennial, Claire Tryon, Planning and Education Coordinator at the State Historic Preservation Office in Charleston, will show and discuss many pre-Revolutionary structures and landmarks and will include beautiful and well-maintained structures through West Virginia.
¯March 2: Once a Big Red, Always a Big Red!
Former Parkersburg High School Coach Buddy James and a few of his football friends will talk about and reminisce about the history of Big Red Football through his tenure as head coach.
James, who also was an outstanding athlete at Parkersburg High, was named the Winningest West Virginia Coach upon his retirement in 1990.
