COLUMBUS — Marietta and Washington County were proudly represented at the 13th Annual Appalachian Heritage Luncheon held at the Ohio Statehouse on Dec. 17.
The event celebrated notable achievements and contributions to the Appalachian region, honoring the Valley Gem Sternwheeler, an iconic local business owned by Heather and Jason Sands, and Grady Smith, an outstanding community advocate.
The Valley Gem Sternwheeler was recognized as an Appalachian Success Story.
The Sands’ dedication to preserving and showcasing Marietta’s river brings thousands of visitors to the city each year, boosting tourism and fostering a deeper appreciation for the region’s history and culture. The Valley Gem Sternwheeler is a vital part of Marietta’s identity, contributing significantly to the local economy and community pride.
Smith, a devoted advocate for environmental stewardship, was awarded the Sam Jones Model Citizen Award for his outstanding work with the Marietta Tree Commission. Smith’s efforts have not only enhanced the beauty and sustainability of the city but also inspired others to join in creating a greener, healthier community for future generations.

Both honorees exemplify the passion and dedication that make our region such a special place to live and visit.”
