Marietta SAR to mark 250th anniversary of Lexington, Concord
The Marietta Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution on Saturday will host a commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the “shot heard ’round the world” and the battles of Lexington and Concord that marked the start of the Revolutionary War.
The event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Mound Cemetery.
What started with the Dawes-Revere “Midnight Ride” that met in Lexington led to the first shots being fired on Lexington Green between the Minutemen and the British Army. The question of “Who fired first?” will be discussed along with the direct connections between the Marietta pioneers and those Lexington and Concord Minutemen fighting that day. Other topics will include an enslaved man named Prince Estabrook, one of the Lexington Minutemen, and another little known, but important action at Springfield, Massachusetts, that was led by one of the Marietta founders.
The program is free and open to the public.
