Washington, Morgan officials combine efforts in drug investigation
In a display of inter-agency cooperation, Washington County Sheriff Mark Warden and Morgan County Sheriff James Fisher joined forces to tackle drug trafficking in their communities.
On Tuesday, detectives from both departments collaborated on a targeted investigation, culminating in the arrest of Donald James Smith Jr., also known as DJ, at 2420 Unionville Road, McConnelsville, Ohio, according to a Washington County Sheriff’s Office press release.
Detectives observed a red Audi TT coupe with license plate sticker violation, and exceeding the posted speed limit.
A traffic stop was initiated on State Route 60 within the McConnelsville corporation limits.
Detectives approached the vehicle and began conversing with the driver and passenger. Det. Peters advised the occupants that his K9 Timmy would be performing a free air sniff around the vehicle.
K9 Timmy positively indicated on the driver’s side door, prompting detectives to request both subjects to exit the vehicle.
The driver was identified as Donald Smith Jr., and the passenger as David Smith.
A record check revealed two outstanding arrest warrants for David Anthony Smith. David Smith was arrested and secured in a patrol car for transport to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.
A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered 137 grams (4.7 ounces) of a white crystal like substance, believed to be methamphetamine, in a clear plastic bag; 3 grams of a white substance, believed to be fentanyl, in a clear bag; digital scales, and glass pipes, the release said.
Additionally, detectives recovered a Dollar General bag containing recently purchased plastic sandwich bags.
The search also yielded firearms, including a 22 rifle with scope, with several rounds in the magazine tube, and one in the chamber, and a green Tisas 1911 .45 caliber with an empty chamber, and a fully loaded magazine.
Donald James Smith Jr. was placed under arrest and charged with aggravated possession of a controlled substance, a second-degree felony.
Both Donald and David Smith were transported to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail for processing.
