Volunteers help spruce up the Poorhouse Cemetery

Participants gathered Saturday for the 10th Poorhouse Cemetery Cleanup at West Virginia University at Parkersburg to pick up trash, straighten existing crosses and spruce up the graves. The Wood County Poorhouse once stood on the college’s grounds. It was home to people expected to work the fields, tend livestock, clean, cook and help maintain the property in return for food, clothing, shelter and medical care.
