Wreaths will be cast into the Ohio River on Sunday in a pair of events marking the 84th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor that drew the United States into World War II.
In Marietta, the Washington County Veterans Service Commission will host a ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Armory on Front Street, featuring remarks from retired Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sgt. Steve Booth.
Booth will speak about remembrance, service and the continuing legacy of those who defended the nation, according to a release from the commission.
The ceremony will conclude with a tribute in which wreaths will be ceremonially placed in the Ohio River in honor of those who perished at Pearl Harbor and all veterans who have given their lives in service to the country. Marine Corps League Detachment 1436 will provide a rifle salute and the playing of “Taps.”
In Parkersburg, various veterans’ groups will gather at Point Park at 2 p.m. Sunday as well. They too will place wreaths in the river representing different branches of the military and groups.

The Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor claimed the lives of 2,403 Americans and wounded thousands more, the Veterans Service Commission release said.
“Remembering this day ensures that the bravery of those who served – and the cost of freedom – are never forgotten,” it said.
