WSCC recognizes students of the month

Washington State Community College announces the March selections for the Student of the Month program. The program was created to recognize those students that strive for success by overcoming obstacles and committing to complete their education. Based on a large number of faculty and staff nominations, WSCC has selected two students, Stacie Daugherty and Nicholas Stephens, for recognition as the March Students of the Month.

Stacie Daugherty, an Office Administrative Services Technology (OAST)-Executive major, was nominated by WSCC instructors Debra Hendershot, Natalie Lowe, and Karen Poorman. Daugherty’s instructors feel that she exemplifies the best of WSCC and the OAST Program. She has excelled in her three practicum experiences at Skuttle Manufacturing and has transitioned from student to part-time employee, and will gain full-time employment upon graduation this May. Former WSCC board member Davis Powers, president and CEO of Skuttle Manufacturing, said, “Stacie is a delight to work with. Outstanding work performance and communication are just a couple of reasons why she is not only a great student, but also the reason why we at Skuttle hired her.” Daugherty is also a member of WSCC’s honor society, Phi Theta Kappa.

Nicholas Stephens, a biological sciences transfer major, was nominated by WSCC instructor Deborah Rosenthal. Stephens is recognized for being extremely serious about his school work and always studying beyond what is necessary to make the highest scores in class. According to instructor Rosenthal, “His commitment to achieve his goals whilst he maintains a positive attitude and helps others inside and outside the classroom is commendable.” Stephens founded the WSCC Science Club in which he currently serves as president. He also volunteers at the Humane Society and Marietta in Bloom. After graduation this spring, he plans to transfer to Ohio University to pursue a four-year degree in chemical engineering.
