2020 Switzerland of Ohio District Spelling Bee

On Jan. 21, the Switzerland of Ohio Schools held the District Spelling Bee. There were students representing all five of the elementary schools. Students competed and won spots from their school bees in order to compete at the District Bee.

Zachary Lively, an eighth grader from River Elementary, was the overall winner of the District Spelling Bee. Mallery Brake, a sixth grader from River Elementary, received the second place award for Outstanding Spelling. Maxxwell Johnson, a fourth grader from Woodsfield Elementary, received the third place award for Outstanding Spelling.

The top seven students, plus one alternate, from our District Spelling Bee will go on to compete March 20 at the Regional Spelling Bee in Marietta. Also representing Switzerland of Ohio Schools at the Regional Bee will be: Kenneth Robertson – Skyvue Elem., Haddon Lockyer – Skyvue Elem., Grant Smith – River Elem., Abby Kinney – Woodsfield Elem., Avery Griffin – River Elem., and Kennady Russell – Skyvue Elem. as the alternate.

Coaches from each school worked with the students to help them get ready for the District Spelling Bee and will continue to work with the top eight to prepare for the Regional Bee. The coaches for each building are: Barbara Faldowski – Beallsville, Brandon Bunting – Powhatan, Rebecca Reddin – River, Breanna Dean – Skyvue, and Amanda Blackstone – Woodsfield.

We would like to thank the following business and people who donated prizes for the Bee: Yoss Law Office, Ohio Valley Community Credit, State Farm Insurance – Tim Blue, Wesbanco, Woodsfield Savings, Kiwanis Club, Common Wealth Financial Services, Paulus Insurance, Belmont Savings, Citizens National Bank, and Modern Home and Hardware.
