Lawrence Gilbert Moody

Lawrence Gilbert (Gib) Moody was born January 26, 1932 in Washington County Ohio to the late David and Rosa Adams Moody. He passed on September 7, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. He was a valedictorian graduate of Vincent High School, attended Ohio University, appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy, and received his Chemical Engineering degree with honors from The Ohio State University in 1954.

He married Marilyn Clara (Miller) Moody March 6, 1955. They lived in Barlow Township for 10 years, Somerville, NJ for four years, Pittsburgh, PA for five years, and moved to Marietta in 1974.

His engineering career spanned 43 years, including time at American Cyanamide in Marietta and Willow Island, WV; Union Carbide Plastics Div. in Marietta and Bound Brook, NJ; Mobay Chemical Co. in Pittsburgh, PA; and Union Carbide Silicones (and subsequent owners) in Sistersville, WV where he retired as the Silanes Engineering Manager in 1997. He was credited with an Engineering Process Patent. He worked with a team to create major production processes in Italy and Sistersville, WV using the patented process. He and Marilyn cherished the work and relationships created during his final career years in Italy.

Our family also greatly benefited from Gib’s technical prowess. Many generations and extended family members have fond memories of learning mathematics, from algebra to calculus, and the sciences from Gib. He was always available to support the family’s education needs.

He was a member and ordained Elder of the First Presbyterian Church since 1974. Gib loved supporting the Presbyterian Church, through gardening in the Memorial Garden and making building repairs. He was a member and director of the Civitan Club, and the Marietta YMCA.

Gib, upon retirement, pursued a personal passion to sketch and create drawings, as well as continuing his education at Marietta College through the Learning in Retirement program. He enjoyed golf, bridge, furniture restoration, home projects, and woodworking. Gib and Marilyn enjoyed traveling, having recently traveled with a Presbyterian Church group to Scotland, and completed visits to all 50 states during their drive home through Nebraska after attending their granddaughter’s wedding in Colorado.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn, two daughters and a son: Barbara (Bill) Rankin, of Marietta, Annette (Alex Randow) of Chicago IL, and Phillip (Lou) of Archbold OH; three grandchildren; Logan (Bethany) Moody, Katherine (Cody) Lappala, and Carly Rankin; one great grandchild: Oscar Moody. He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother: Ruby McKay, Dorothy Boone, and Ralph Moody.

Family will greet friends at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home on Tuesday (Sept. 10) from 2-4 and 6-8. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday (Sept. 11) at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church followed by a reception in fellowship hall. Interment will be Putnam Cemetery. Messages of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.Lankfordfh.com.

Thank you Christ for placing this man in our lives. We are grateful for the cherished moments and lasting impact he has had on us all.
