Shirley Roann (Rueckert) Deering

Shirley Roann (Rueckert) Deering of Canton, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 17th, 2021 after a brief illness. Born in Westgate, Iowa in 1930, Shirley graduated from West Central High School in Maynard, IA, then went on to graduate from nursing school. She lived in Chicago, IL for many years with her husband, Herb, before they moved to Kennesaw, GA. She worked as a nurse and rehabilitation nursing consultant in both locations before her retirement.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Ina Rueckert of Iowa, her sister, Margie Nauholz, formerly of Arlington,Iowa, and her beloved husband, Herbert Deering. She is survived by her sister, Darlene Garner of New York, and loving nieces, nephews, and their families.

Shirley was independent and perpetually curious. She traveled the world–first with her husband Herb, and then on her own in later years, or with her sister, Darlene. She believed in giving back to her community, spending many years as a hospice volunteer, and most recently volunteering at the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art.

There are no formal memorial services planned at this time. The body will be cremated and interred with her husband. Donations may be made in her memory to the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art or your choice of hospice or animal welfare organizations. Her family is comforted by the thought that she and Herb are together again, drinking champagne and tapping their toes to some of heaven’s best jazz music.
