Vote ‘yes’ for schools on Tuesday

Ohio’s primary election is Tuesday and voters of the Belpre and Warren school districts will be asked to renew levies for their schools.

We urge voters to renew these levies and allow continued financial support to pay for important work in the districts.

In Belpre, the 3.65 mill emergency levy generates $825,000 annually for the school district and, if passed, will continue to generate the same amount with no increase in taxes. Under the levy, the owner of a $100,000 owner-occupied house pays $111.78 a year. The $111.78 annually works out to $9.32 a month or about 30 cents a day.

The levy was originally adopted in March 2000 and was renewed for a third time in November 2009.

Warren is seeking the renewal of a 5.54-mill emergency levy that will generate $1.75 million for the day-to-day operation of the district’s schools. Renewal of the levy will cost $169.67 a year for the owner of a home appraised at $100,000. Warren Schools Superintendent Kyle Newton said if approved this would be the fifth time the emergency levy has been renewed by the community at the same rate since 1995.

Both school boards recently chose to amend the original emergency levies from five to 10 years in order to save the districts and taxpayers money.

We urge voters of Belpre and Warren school districts to approve their respective renewal levies on Tuesday.
