Frigid days require extra measure of caring

Though the calendar claims it’s not yet winter, the Mid-Ohio Valley had its first brutal taste of winter weather this week, with wind chills in the negative numbers.

Those of us who can stay indoors with a reliable source of heat are fortunate to do so. But let’s also remember to check on those who may need a little extra help making it through.

Elderly neighbors, friends and family may struggle with the cold a little more. Try to check on them and make sure they have an adequate, safe heat source and enough food and supplies that they don’t have to venture outside in frigid weather.

If you know a family in need that may not be able to properly bundle up their children, see if you can help. That may be through giving them a coat or gloves on your own or contacting a program that helps with these needs. We’ve all seen children at bus stops on freezing days not dressed appropriately for the weather. Let’s not turn a blind eye to the problem.

Our four-legged friends may also need a hand. If you’re able to bring pets inside or into a garage, do so. If not, please be sure they have shelter. A shelter filled with straw is the best bet, as it won’t freeze like a blanket would. If you see a neighbor’s pet in extreme conditions, make sure to contact the county dog warden or humane officer.

The wintry weather can turn us all a little into homebodies. But let’s not forget to look around and take care of others, too.
