United Way kicks off important campaign

According to United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley Executive Director Stacy DeCicco, 50 percent of local families are “1-2 paychecks away from a financial crisis and every day the gap widens.”

She was talking to all of us when she added “It’s time we start closing the gap.” Washington County residents can certainly get behind a goal like that.

This year’s is the first full United Way campaign that includes all of Washington County in the United Way Alliance. From Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County to the Betsey Mills Club, or Marietta Family YMCA to the Right Path for Washington County, “it’s all under our roof,” DeCicco said during Tuesday’s campaign kick-off.

In fact there are 80 local partner agencies working with the United Way — and hoping local residents will step up to the theme: Embrace your inner hero. With no stated financial goal (although, of course, money is needed), DeCicco said “the goal is to see a measurable change, to be able to identify progress.”

Think about it, then. Think about what you can do to help close that gap for some families. Maybe it does mean opening your pocketbooks; but maybe it means something more. “Find your cape,” as DeCicco put it, and take a look at what you can do, not only during this year’s campaign, but all year long, to help the United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley and its partner agencies.
