Stand up, be counted in census
The 2020 Census is underway and we urge everyone in our community to participate.
Having an accurate population count is vital to ensuring this area receives the right amount of state and federal funding. An undercount of population, as is suspected in the 2010 census for Washington County, means that agencies like Washington County Department of Job and Family Services, Washington-Morgan Community Action and others that receive federal funds won’t receive the amount they should. This can mean cuts to programs that our local residents depend on.
The census also impacts other funding, such as Community Development Block Grants received by the city of Marietta and utilized for necessary community projects.
Please make sure to take part in the count. No census information is shared–doing so is a violation of federal law.
Residents will receive instructions in the mail on how to complete the census but if you know someone who doesn’t have a fixed address, please encourage them to be part of the count, too. There are instructions for how to include those who are transient, in a nursing home or have other living arrangements.
Households can respond to the census online, by phone or by mail. Some may even be visited by a census taker who comes to their home. It’s a simple process. It’s a private process. Let’s make sure we’re all counted.
