There is more work to be done to provide LGBT rights
This week’s Supreme Court decision that gay and transgender people in American can no longer be fired or discriminated against in the workplace is a landmark decision, long overdue.
But this is not the end of the battle for rights for this population. There is still a lot of work to be done.
While the decision means there will be protections at work, gay and transgender citizens still don’t have equal protection in other areas, such as housing and health care. A 2019 bill to address these inequalities has been dormant for some time in Congress.
Every American citizen deserves the same civil rights that we all enjoy. Something as vital as those rights can’t be piecemeal and given to some and not others.
While we should celebrate this long fought-for victory, we should also remember it’s just one step in the right direction.
