Shop local on Small Business Saturday
Saturday, officially, is Small Business Saturday. It is the day on which, for the past several years, clever marketers have suggested we spend a single day altering our shopping habits to explore the small, locally owned businesses in our communities.
It’s a great idea, but it is not big enough, especially this year. Mid-Ohio Valley residents could do a world of good for our local economy if we spent the entire holiday shopping season shopping small. We have seen first hand the damage to those pillars of our communities. And we have seen that for some, this special shopping day comes too late.
Those who have survived are struggling, and they need our help.
Make no mistake, you will be doing yourself a favor, too. Our local businesses provide shopping options — and a connection to our neighbors — that cannot be found at the mega retailers and online giants. Some of the best gifts are those that cannot be found just anywhere. Rather than wrap up the same present being given all over the country this year, why not give something only a relative handful of people will receive, because it came from somewhere small and special? It came from the heart.
Here is a bonus, because they are small, it is impossible for many of our retail gems to be swarmed by the kinds of crowds you might encounter with the big guys. In this day and age, that is priceless.
So yes, then, shop small on this Small Business Saturday, but don’t stop there. Make it a habit. They — and those receiving your gifts –will thank you.
