OSU working with victims

A recent editorial about sexual abuse by former Ohio State doctor Richard Strauss failed to mention that the university has reached settlement agreements with 185 survivors totaling $46.7 million. No taxpayer, tuition or restricted donor funds are utilized for these settlements, and the university continues to participate in good faith in the mediation process with the survivors involved in the remaining lawsuits.

Since February 2019, the university has been covering the cost of professionally certified counseling services and treatment for anyone affected, as well as reimbursing costs for preexisting counseling and treatment related to Strauss. There is no limit to the counseling and treatment, and it will continue to be offered for as long as anyone needs it.

Strauss was employed at Ohio State from 1978 to 1998 and died in 2005. His conduct was reprehensible, and the university’s failure at the time to prevent his abuse was unacceptable. On behalf of the university, I want to express our deep regret and apologies to all who experienced his abuse.
