Our alerts can make you aware

January 30, 2013 - Art Smith
If something happens, we will let you know.

For several years we have had a breaking news feature on our website that allows us to flag a story we think needs attention by people visiting our website. The feature puts a yellow stripe across the top of every page of our website that is a link to the story.

We have used the feature many times to let our readers know about things that are evolving or things that have occurred we feel readers need to know immediately. As long a reader is on our site, they will see the notification and be able to view the story.

Thousands of people use our site everyday, we know no one is on the site all day, thus it is very possible a reader may not be aware of breaking news; you may miss something that you really need to know about simply because you are not on our website.

The recently added iPhone app adds to the ways you can find out about things urgently.

The app will flash a notification onto your screen whenever we place breaking news on our website. For you to see it though, you need to make sure you allow us to display notifications.

Here are the steps. - First you have to download the app. If you haven’t done so, simply visit our website with your iPhone and you will be promoted to download the app.

- Once the app downloads you will get a message that we “would like to send you push notifications” – click OK. I promise we will not go overboard on what we push to you.

If you have already downloaded the app and clicked that you did not want us to push information to you, it is possible for you to change your mind by opening up the “settings” on your phone.

Simply open your settings click on the Notification link, scroll down to the bottom to the apps that are not in your Notification Center. Open the settings for the newspaper and turn all the settings to the ON position.

The next time something big happens, we’ll drop you a note.
