Richard Athey "Rick" Griffiths Jr., 66, of Marietta, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at Marietta Memorial Hospital, following a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 5, 1947, in Marietta to Richard Athey and Garnet Tilton Griffiths Sr.
He was a 1965 graduate of Marietta High School. Rick was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during the Vietnam Era. He retired in 2004 from AMP Ohio, he then drove bus for WASCO/Ewing until he became ill. He was a member of Marietta Moose Lodge #1823, American Legion Post #64, VFW Post #5108, and Fearing Camp #2 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. He enjoyed fishing and genealogy.
Rick is survived by his wife, Marge Shively Griffiths, they were married on Sept. 28, 2002; also by his daughter, Melissa Griffiths Erb (Mark) of Marietta; and son, Eric Richard Griffiths (Amber) of Marietta. With his marriage to Marge, two sons were added to the family: Scott Townsend (Laura) of Hebron and Larry John Townsend of Marietta. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Jessica Lamb (fiance, Ryan Cutright), Kaitlin Lamb, Courtney Griffiths, Jordan, Caleb and Konner Townsend; as well as a brother, Bob Griffiths (Carol), of Vienna, W.Va.; his mother in law, Jacqueline Shively, of Williamstown; and his faithful companion, his dog, "Griffey." He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Russell Griffiths, and a granddaughter, Alisha Lamb.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with Chaplain Bob Sinnett officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williamstown, with full military rites being observed.
