Mountain bikers of all skill levels will have the chance to race and compete during the 2014 Challenge at Mountwood Park mountain bike race Sunday at Mountwood Park east of Parkersburg off U.S. 50.
The event -now in its 19th year - is sponsored by Simonton Windows and presented by the River Valley Mountain Bike Association.
It is the largest XC race in West Virginia and marks the first race of the season in the West Virginia Mountain Bike Association XC series.
Registration on Race Day will begin at 9 a.m. at Mountwood Park. The race will begin at noon.
The cost is $30 for race entry plus $8 for a one-day WVMBA membership or $30 for a one-year WVMBA membership which is good for WVMBA sanctioned events.
The race will be divided by skill classes, including Expert, Sport and Beginner. All classes start at noon from the Mountwood Marina parking lot. The Expert and Supersport classes will go 19 miles, the Sport Class will go 13 miles and the Beginner class course is seven miles.
For children, there will be a free skills clinic at 10 a.m. Children can hone their skills riding over an assortment of obstacles in the non-competitive event. A free race will begin at 11 a.m., with coaching and support available.
The event includes cash and prizes for top finishers, T-shirts for the first 200 registrants and a post-race meal.
