Warren boys soccer squad can’t overcome Chillicothe; fall 6-0

MIKE MORRISON, The Marietta Times Warren's Matt Dugan (12) fights for possession of the ball against Chillicothe's Michael Herlihy (22) in Saturday's district championship game at Logan High School. The Cavs downed the Warriors 6-0.

LOGAN — Warren had a pretty good idea of what they were up against when they took on top-seeded Chillicothe in a Division II district championship game Saturday afternoon at Logan High School.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, Chillicothe was every bit as good as advertised as the Cavaliers scored a dominating 6-0 victory to claim the district championship.

Chillicothe scored a trio of goals in each half as six different Cavalier players got in on the act by scoring one goal apiece.

“They were a very good possession style team and we knew that coming in,” said Warren head coach Andrew Pinkerton. “We thought we might be able to put a lot of pressure onto them and it worked off and on, but we just couldn’t get enough stops.”

The Cavaliers gave a brief preview of what was to come when junior Christian Brown got them on the board with a goal just over ten minutes into the contest.

Eight minutes later, sophomore Alex Beavers made it 2-0 when he drilled a kick past Warrior keeper Thomas Williams and five minutes after that Matthew Detty scored the third Cavs goal of the half with an assist from John Graves.

“They were a very good team and played a lot better than we did from the start,” said Warrior senior Trent Hutchinson, one of four seniors in his final game for the royal blue and white. “This is what we we worked for all year and to not play well like this is tough.”

The Cavaliers kept pressure on Warren the entire game as they got off 26 shots on goal in the contest compared to just four for the Warriors.

Warren managed to keep Chillicothe off the board for the first ten minutes of the second half but once again the Cavs scored a goal in the 11th minute of the half, this one by sophomore Joseph Herily.

Beavers was credited with the assist on the fourth goal of the game for the Cavaliers, who came into the game with a 22-1-1 record.

The score would remain 4-0 until John Graves and Tanner Cutright rounded out the scoring with Cavalier goals with just over ten minutes to play.

Pinkerton had high praise for the four seniors on his squad.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our entire team especially our four seniors,” said Pinkerton, in his second season as Warren head coach. “A lot of people before the season started didn’t give us much chance at playing in a district championship game so this  is a huge credit to these kids.”

In addition to Hutchinson, Kendrick Foreman, Wyatt Grose and exchange student Paolo Furrini each suited up for the final time as Warriors.

“It was a tough game and Chillicothe is a very hard team,” said Furrini, a native of Italy. “We gave everything we had in that moment and we are proud of our team.”

Foreman felt that the Warriors completed a very successful season despite the loss.

“Overall  I would say we had a pretty good season,” said Foreman. “We beat a lot of good teams who were ranked. Obviously the outcome today is not what we wanted but I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this team and what we accomplished this season.”

The appearance in the district championship game was the farthest the Warriors had advanced in the four years at Warren for the quartet of seniors.

“I’m proud of our team for working hard and we played for four years and now we have this medal to show for it,” said Grose. “We started off a little slow early on but we really came together as a team.”

Warren’s season comes to an end with a 9-6-3 record.
