Warriors OUSTED

Warren drops contest to Fairfield Union, season over

RON JOHNSTON, The Marietta Times Warren’s Elisabeth Williams dives back to third base safely as Fairfield Union’s Brittny Ogg looks for the ball.

ATHENS — Warren High went from four up to four down in a pivotal sixth inning.

The Warriors were unable to recover from that frame and dropped a 9-4 decision to Fairfield Union in an OHSAA Girls Fast-Pitch Softball Division II District semifinal at Ohio University Monday night.

WHS, which finished with a 13-6 record, had only two hits in the contest.

“Our hitting was the difference in the game, too,” said Warren skipper Jenny Lynch.

“We didn’t come out hitting the ball, and you’ve got to hit to win and we didn’t — and they (Falcons) did.”

Fairfield Union (12-8) advances and is scheduled to play Sheridan in a district final at 5 p.m. Thursday at OU. Of the Falcons’ 10 hits, seven came during a bat-around in the sixth inning when they plated eight runs.

Warren staked itself to a 1-0 first-inning advantage when Diamond Decker singled home Chloe Corser.

The Warriors added three more runs to make it 4-0 in the fourth without the benefit of a hit. Elisabeth Williams got things started with a leadoff walk, and moved up a base when Decker was issued an intentional free pass.

Next up, Sarah Greenlee sacrifice bunted Williams and Decker to third and second, respectively.

Olivia Shutts then plated Williams on a fielder’s choice and Decker also legged it home. Shutts scored the fourth Warrior run on Josie Yoho’s bunt.

“Those four runs, we really created,” Lynch said.

Meanwhile, the right-handed-throwing Greenlee was cruising in the circle, hurling five shutout innings.

But in the top of the sixth, the Muskingum University recruit struggled and faced 10 Falcon batters before being relieved by Decker.

Greenlee finished with seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.

During the Fairfield Union surge, Kayla Forsythe had two hits, including a run-scoring double.

Laiykn Teasley aided her own cause in the circle when she cleared the bases with a two-basehit. Lauren McMahon, Shayla Munyan, Haylen Terry, and Myia LaFollette all drove in one run apiece.

After Decker gave up a run-scoring single to LaFollette, she retired the side when she slipped a called third strike past the 12th Falcon to bat in the inning.

Fairfield Union added another run in the seventh when courtesy runner Addyson Berkfield legged it home on a wild pitch.

In the bottom half of the frame, Teasley retired the Warriors in order to claim the victory. Teasley, a freshman, finished with seven whiffs, and was 3-for-4 at the plate.

“They (Falcons) were better than us today,” Lynch said.
