Eastern gets past Golden Eagles
BELPRE — The Golden Eagles suffered a loss from Eastern Friday night 63-50.
“We knew they were going to be tough,” said Eastern head coach David Knight. “They have some size and they have a really good guard. We came out and tried to match their energy early.”
The first quarter was a close contest with Eastern at 17 and Belpre at 12 to clock out the first quarter. Belpre had a lot of contributors with Logan Adams and Evan Wells each knocking down a triple. Teammates Nick Godfrey, Jerimiah Stitt, and Connor Baker all added two points to the board. Blaise Facemyer would match Adams and Wells with two threes of his own. His teammate, Ryan Dill, would add his own three which proved to be the difference maker to give his team the edge at the first.
The second quarter maintained the close contest with Adams putting up seven points for the Golden Eagles. Godfrey put up two foul shots and Collin Alloway contributed one foul shot to put the Eagles within five points distance at the half, 28-23.
“What really sparked us tonight was Mason DiShong,” said Knight. “He came in off the bench. You won’t see it in the box score but he brought the toughness, the rebounding and the energy to help get us going and that’s a team win right there.”
Godfrey went off in the third quarter contributing 10 points for the Golden Eagles. Easterns’ Isaiah Fish knocked down eight points and his efforts were complimented by his teammate Garrett Barringer who made four points and and one foul shot. The third quarter was a very close contest and one where Belpre regained ground. The score was Eastern 42, Belpre 40 to cap off the third quarter.
“Eastern’s a great team, very talented, and they just flat out wanted it tonight,” said Belpre’s head coach Tyler Leasure. “Defensively we were giving up too many offensive boards and giving up too many second chance points. We’re going to try to take the positives and work from here.”
The final quarter saw solid effort from Adams who put up four points for his team and was three of four from the line. That effort from the Golden Eagles’ side wasn’t enough to stop Eastern from making shots go to the basket. Easterns’ Dill came out strong for his team putting up 11 points with Colton Reynolds, Garrett Barringer and Mason DiShong all contributing two points for their team.
“This will get us to the next step of learning to play harder and tougher,” said Knight. “Tonight was a test. Life on the road in any league is a bear. So to get a win on the road, that’s exciting.”
