Warren boys unable to best Meadowbrook

RON JOHNSTON, The Marietta Times Warren’s Brandon Simoniette is fouled as Meadowbrook’s Davis Singleton (10) defends during boys’ basketball action at Warrior gym Saturday night. The Warriors lost 55-39.

VINCENT — Seth Dennis had a good shooting night.

But no other Warrior cager scored in double digits as Warren High dropped a 55-39 decision to visiting Meadowbrook High in boys’ basketball action Saturday night.

The 6-foot Dennis finished with a game-high 20 points, and a dozen came in the fourth quarter.

“I was disappointed in Seth’s first half,” said WHS head coach Blane Maddox. “I thought he should’ve been a little bit more assertive. He’s got to be very aggressive for us and create for others.”

Isaac Colgrove and Brandon Simoniette added 8 and 6 points, respectively, for the Warriors (3-2). The royal blue and white ended up shooting 32 percent (15 of 47) from the floor.

“We didn’t figure out their matchups until way late,” Maddox said. We were just out of sync tonight and didn’t hit much — and they (Colts) hit a lot of shots. We played a good team and we didn’t play well.”

Scooter Tolzda-coached Meadowbrook (3-1) was paced by Zach Rusnak’s 14 points, which included four triples. Davis Black and Jon McCall each chipped in with 12 markers, while Addy Black netted 10.

Neither school shot particularly well in the opening period with Meadowbrook making three field goals and Warren just one. At the end of the first eight minutes of play, the Colts clung to a 9-4 lead.

In the second quarter, the 5-10 Rusnak scored 11 points and 6-5 Davis Black added eight as MHS stretched its lead to 29-17 at halftime. After going scoreless in the first, Dennis tallied eight points in the second to keep the Warriors in the hunt.

But in the third quarter, Warren couldn’t buy a bucket until Kurt Taylor drained a triple in the closing minute. Meanwhile, Meadowbrook’s Addy Black and McCall scored six points apiece as the Colts’ lead bulged to 47-21.

Dennis got hot in the final stanza, scoring 12 points. But it proved to be too little, too late as Meadowbrook coasted home with a 16-point win.

“All the guys tried hard, and they didn’t quit,” Maddox said. “We just ran into a better team.

“We just have to recover. We’re still getting organized. And we’ll see what happens when we go to Meadowbrook (Jan. 19, 2019). I think we’ll give them a better ballgame the next time.”

Warren is scheduled to host the Belpre Golden Eagles at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
