Bev/Low triumphs in region opener

CHARLESTON, Ill. — A big offensive outburst helped propel Beverly/Lowell Post 389/750 past Gladwin Post 171 (Mich.) 13-5 in the opening round of the American Legion Baseball Great Lakes Regional Tournament.

Beverly/Lowell, the Ohio state champs, scored 13 runs on 14 hits and never let up, scoring four runs in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Nate Brothers and Kurt Taylor both were 3 for 4 with three runs-batted-in apiece. Brothers also doubled, as did Tate Engle, who was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Maeson Long was 2 for 2 at the plate and scored four runs.

On the mound, Kam Hesson worked five strong innings to earn the win. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. Caleb Davis and Taylor each pitched an inning of relief.

Carson Longstreth was Gladwin’s top hitter, going 3 for 4 with a home run and a triple. Hunter Merillat was 3 for 4 with a double, while Chase Raymond went 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Garhet Metiva lasted just 2 1/3 innings on the bump in a losing effort. Lane Peters, Lucas Schweinsberg and Drew Grove combined to eat the rest of the innings. Gladwin pitchers walked seven batters and fanned four.

Beverly/Lowell is back in action at 6 p.m. today against Kentucky state champion Lyon County Post 68.
