Ten Cadets earn All-East District honors

Photo by Ron Johnston Fort Frye senior Isiah Jones was the Division VI East District Offensive Player of the Year.

Though Fort Frye’s 2019 season came to a heart-breaking end Friday, the Cadets still had an amazing year on the gridiron.

Fort Frye, which went a perfect 10-0 in regular season play and won the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference 3A championship, saw 10 of its players earn first team All-East District recognition.

Leading the way was senior left guard and linebacker Isiah Jones. Jones, a four-year starter at FFHS, was named the Division VI East District Offensive Player of the Year.

An excellent blocker and a hard-hitting defender, Jones received high praise from head coach Eric Huck.

“He’s one of the best players I’ve ever coached,” said Huck, who himself was named the district’s Coach of the Year.

In 10 regular season games, Fort Frye rushed 404 times for 3,172 yards and 53 touchdowns. That’s an average 7.9 yards per carry, and it all started up front with Jones. Sophomore left tackle Casey Brooker also played a pivotal role in the line’s success and was named first team all-district for his efforts.

Fort Frye’s other first team honorees were Tyler Fisher, Zane Wallace, Ian Ellis, Thomas Lenhart, Braden Medley, Dylan Hart, Caden Fryman and Brady Schilling.

The senior running back duo of Fisher and Wallace were the biggest beneficiaries of Fort Frye’s powerful line. Both first team selections, Fisher led the team with 1,012 yards and 18 touchdowns in the regular season while Wallace rushed 64 times for 814 yards and nine scores. Fisher and Wallace also were reliable receiving targets out of the backfield for sophomore quarterback Ellis.

Ellis completed 58 passes on 87 attempts for 1,070 yards and 13 touchdowns to just three interceptions in his first full season as a starting QB. Tasked with filling the shoes of four-year starter Tate Engle, Ellis performed admirably under center and helped keep teams from keying on Fort Frye’s ground attack.

Defensively, Fort Frye surrendered just 8.9 points per game in the regular season.

The Cadets were vicious up front, led by juniors Lenhart and Medley. Lenhart lived in opposing backfields, racking up 23 tackles for a loss. Medley, who finished the regular season with eight QB hurries and two sacks, was called by Huck “our best pass rushing D-lineman.”

At linebacker, Hart established a reputation as one of the best defenders in the Mid-Ohio Valley after a monster junior season. Hart posted a team-high 95 tackles to go along with three sacks in the regular season. Huck called him “an outstanding inside linebacker.”

Fryman played on the outside and was a versatile player for the Cadets. In addition to tallying 55 tackles, Fryman proved to be effective as a pass rusher and a cover man. The senior sacked opposing quarterbacks a team-high four times and also matched up with wide receivers in coverage when needed.

Schilling, a senior, was a force on both sides of the ball. He was honored by the district as a defensive back, where he was a “shut-down corner,” Huck said. Schilling finished the regular season with 12 passes defended and six interceptions, both team-highs. Offensively, Schilling led the Cadets with 25 catches for 539 yards and six TDs.

In Division VII, Frontier enjoyed a successful 7-3 season and saw eight of its players earn all-district honors.

J.D. Schmidt, Noah Barnhart, Logan Brookover and Gaige Bowersock were first teamers, Joel Lewis and Kalyb McQueary were second teamers and Tanner Bills and Breckin Hoff were special mention.

Schmidt, a sophomore quarterback, passed for 1,602 yards and 18 touchdowns. He completed 114 of 203 attempts and was intercepted eight times.

Barnhart, a senior running back and linebacker, was honored on offense after rushing 118 times for 740 yards and 14 touchdowns. He was also a threat in the passing game, catching 14 balls for 186 yards and a score. Defensively, he finished with 73 tackles, two sacks and a pick.

Brookover, a senior tight end and linebacker, earned first team honors on offense. He caught 35 passes for 505 yards and seven TDs. On defense he racked up 95 tackles and an interception.

Lewis, a senior, earned second team honors as a running back. He carried 111 times for 860 yards and 14 touchdowns despite missing playing time early in the season with an injury.

Bowersock was the top offensive lineman for head coach Russ Morris’ squad and helped lead the way for the Barnhart-Lewis tandem. The senior was a first team O-lineman but registered 67 tackles and three sacks on the D-line as well.

McQueary, a senior, caught 26 passes for 240 yards and three TDs, but it was as a defensive back where he earned all-district status. He finished the season with 46 tackles, four interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a sack.

From Shenandoah, junior Briar Portman (running back), senior Easton Hitchens (offensive lineman), senior Briggs Schafer (defensive lineman), junior Cade Denius (linebacker) and senior Wesley Guy (defensive back) were picked to the first team. On the second team were senior Kendal Sherman (quarterback), senior Logan Waers (offensive lineman) and junior Aden Laipply (linebacker).

From Caldwell, senior Bradley Michael (defensive lineman) and senior Cade Moore (linebacker) were named to the first team. On the second team were junior D-linemen T.J. Wehr and Jonah Croucher while Whyatt Parks and Marshall Sayre were special mention.

From Monroe Central, junior Alex Kilburn (running back) was the lone first teamer. Named to the second team were sophomore Malachi Rose-Burton (quarterback), junior Garet Cramer (offensive line) and senior Paul Yanok (linebacker) while Michael Bunning was named special mention.

In Division V, Morgan senior quarterback Gabe Altier and senior defensive lineman Kaden Williams were named second team all-district. Kolton Young, Karsen Mayle and Landon Pettet were special mention picks.
