Marietta 58, River View 53

WARSAW — Marietta High overcame a five-point halftime deficit by outscoring host River View 36-26 in the second half en route to a 58-53 victory Friday night.

The Tigers finished the regular season 12-10 overall. They’ve won 12 of their last 18 games after an 0-4 start to the season. Marietta also finished an even 7-7 in East Central Ohio League play.

The Black Bears, who were celebrating senior night, took a 19-14 lead after a quarter and maintained the five-point advantage, 27-22, at halftime. The Tigers stepped it up in the third quarter, out-pointing RVHS 18-7 to take a 40-34 lead into the final eight minutes. Marietta stretched its lead to as much as 13, 51-38, on a free-throw by Adrian Avendano. River View cut it to five twice, but Marietta held on.

Tony Munos led all scorers, netting 15 for the orange and black. Markie Duckworth added 12, while Ryan Mannix also reached double figures with 10. Avendano scored seven while Jackson Graham and Tyler Kytta chipped in six apiece.

River View was paced by Cade Hill’s 12 markers, followed by Zach Balo’s 10 and Jordan Bryant’s eight. Jaxon Rinkes and Donnie Kehl tallied seven each.

The Tigers now turn their attention to postseason play. They’ll head to Logan for a Division II sectional semifinal against Athens at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Trimble 58, Waterford 51

GLOUSTER — Waterford gave host Trimble about all it could handle Friday night, but ultimately fell 58-51.

The Wildcats rallied from a 27-19 halftime deficit to tie the game at 36-all after three quarters. The Tomcats outscored the visitors 22-15 in the final eight minutes to claim victory.

Braden Weber led Trimble with 15 points, Blake Guffey added 14 and Austin Wilson netted 10.

Waterford got a game-high 19 points from Zane Heiss plus 11 from Luke Teters. Holden Dailey chipped in seven points and five rebounds.

Maysville 67, Morgan 65

McCONNELSVILLE — With 1:23 remaining, Morgan trimmed a 10-point deficit two one, but was unable to complete the comeback and lost 67-65 to Maysville Friday.

The Raiders trailed 52-43 going into the fourth quarter and were down 64-54 when Gabe Edwards hit three foul shots and Carver Myers drained a 3-pointer to make it 64-60 with less than a minute to play. Myers’ putback with 14 seconds left made it 66-65. The Panthers hit a a free-throw to go up two and then got the stops they needed to hold on.

Kaden Hartman led all scorers with 26 points for Maysville while Quentin Stottsberry added 16 and Mason Swauger netted 10.

Myers had a monster game for the Raiders, leading the team with 20 points, 16 rebounds, six assists and two blocks. Carter Mayle added 16 points, Jason Wells tallied 11 and Josh Wells tacked on eight. Gabe Altier joined Myers with six dimes.

WRESTLING

Region IV Tournament

MILLWOOD, W.Va. — Wirt County finished day one of the Class AA/A, Region IV wrestling tournament here Friday at the Millwood Armory in fourth place with 71.5 points.

Point Pleasant sits in first place with 120 points followed by Winfield (92.5) and Nitro (71.5). Wahama is fifth with 67.5 and is followed by Ravenswood (64), Chapmanville (57), Man (55) and Williamstown (53).

Wirt County head coach Danny Life’s program had five wrestlers reach the semifinals. At 106, Tiger Phillip Balis will face Ashton Wasmer of Williamstown and at 126 Tiger AJ Garrett squares off versus Ravenswood’s Ethan Tanner.

Kolton Parsons (120), Logan Powell (132) and Colton Whipkey (138) also advanced to the semis.

No other area grapplers will go head-to-head in the semifinals.

However, other Little Kanawha Conference grapplers two wins away from a regional title are Calhoun County’s Jett Sampson (113), Williamstown’s Colton Slagle (132) as well as the Ravenswood quartet of Cody Smith (138), Preston Menas (152), Clay Tanner (160) and 182-pounder Chase Hood.
