Maggie Drazba, Tyler Engle among MOV Hall of Fame Class of 2020

The Mid-Ohio Valley Hall of Fame Class of 2020 is set to be inducted on Saturday, June 13, at the Grande Pointe Conference and Reception Center in Vienna.

This year’s inductees include James Abshire, Maggie Drazba, Tyler Engle, Chase Fischer, Dail Harper, Mary A. Lopez, Josh Miller, Paul Page, Jon Shuler and Shane Smith.

JAMES ABSHIRE, JACKSON COUNTY

Abshire is a 1974 graduate of Ripley High School. He was a football and basketball standout, but it was on the gridiron where Abshire really starred.

In high school, he played both ways as a center and a linebacker, earning first team all-state honors as a senior.

He went on to play collegiately, starting four years at West Virginia State and earning first team All-West Virginia Conference honors twice and second team NAIA All-American honors once.

He set the West Virginia State single-season tackles record with 165 stops in 1975.

MAGGIE DRAZBA, PLEASANTS COUNTY

Drazba graduated from St. Marys in 2013 after a stellar, record-setting running career.

As a Blue Devil, Drazba was named the Gatorade West Virginia Girls Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 2011 and 2012, and earned the same honor in track and field in 2013.

She was a Class AA-A individual state champion in cross country three times. In track, she won state four times in the 800, four times in the 1600, three times in the 3200 and once in the 4×800 relay.

She continued her career at West Virginia University and was a key contributor for the Mountaineers.

TYLER ENGLE,

WASHINGTON COUNTY

Engle, who graduated from Fort Frye in 2007, was a three-sport star for the Cadets. He was an all-district honoree in football, but really stood out in basketball and baseball.

As a hooper for Fort Frye, Engle finished with the most career 3-pointers made in Ohio high school history with 329. He graduated as Washington County’s all-time leading scorer with 1,760 points.

In baseball, Engle finished his career with a .502 batting average, 12 home runs and 117 runs-batted-in while playing stellar defense at shortstop. He was the Division IV Player of the Year as a senior in 2007 along with being named first team All-Ohio.

Engle went on to be a four-year starter at Ohio State, helping the Buckeyes win a Big Ten championship in 2009.

CHASE FISCHER, JACKSON COUNTY

Fischer was a menace on the basketball court for the Ripley Vikings, graduating in 2011.

A four-year starter, Fischer was a two-time Class AAA all-stater and graduated as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,210 points. He averaged 32 per game as a junior and 37 per game as a senior.

Fischer ranks 10th all-time in points scored in West Virginia high school basketball history. His 58 points in a 2010 game is the Ripley single-game record.

In 2011, he won the Evans Award as the state’s player of the year, was named West Virginia’s Gatorade Player of the Year and was a first team Parade All-American.

He went on to play collegiately at Wake Forest for two years before transferring to BYU.

DAIL HARPER,

NOBLE COUNTY

A 1986 graduate of Caldwell, Harper was a record-setter in track and an All-Ohioan in football.

He won state championships in the shot put as a junior and senior after finishing as the state runner-up as a sophomore.

Harper was selected as the USA Today Ohio Track Athlete of the Year in 1986, and went on to compete collegiately at Kent State and was a two-time MAC champion and an All-American as a junior.

Also a standout on the gridiron, Harper was a four-year starter at running back and a three-time All-Pioneer Valley Conference selectee, helping the Redskins win two PVC titles. Harper also was a two-time All-East District pick and the district’s Offensive Player of the Year as a senior. He finished his prep career with 3,486 yards.

MARY A. LOPEZ, WOOD COUNTY

A 1975 graduate from Parkersburg Catholic, Lopez was a four-sport captain in basketball, volleyball, crew and softball.

She received 12 varsity letters and went on to play college basketball at Marshall.

She became the Thundering Herd’s second 1,000-point scorer, finishing with 1,126.

She was the team captain at Marshall for two seasons, leading the team to the WV Intercollegiate Tournament Championship in 1977. She led the team in field goal percentage in 1978 and 1979.

JOSH MILLER,

JACKSON COUNTY

Miller, a 2003 Ravenswood High School graduate, earned four varsity letters in baseball, three in football and two in basketball.

In baseball, he was a two-time Class AA all-state honoree and was the all-state captain in 2003, the same year he was named West Virginia’ Gatorade Player of the Year.

He holds the school’s single-season home run record with 14.

In football, he was a two-time all state defensive back and holds the Red Devils’ career interceptions record.

Miller continued his baseball career at West Virginia State, earning three letters and competing in the College World Series in 2005. He had a monster season in 2007, being named WVIAC Player of the Year, North Atlantic Regional Player of the Year and first team Daktronics Division II All-American.

PAUL PAGE,

WOOD COUNTY

Page graduated from Williamstown in 1969 and went on to have tremendous success as a college baseball coach at Ohio Dominican from 1988 to 2016.

Page recorded his 1,000th career coaching victory during the 2016 season.

He retired following the ’16 season, finishing with 1,007 wins, 552 losses and seven ties (.645 winning percentage). He was a five-time conference coach of the year and led ODU to the NAIA World Series six times.

As a Williamstown Yellowjacket, Page was a football, basketball and baseball standout. He continued playing baseball at the collegiate level at Muskingum.

JON SHULER,

WASHINGTON

COUNTY

Shuler graduated from Marietta High School in 1979.

He was a two-year starter at quarterback for the Rich Hahn-coached Tiger football team. He was selected to play in the North-South All-Star Classic in Canton, Ohio.

Shuler also starred in baseball and basketball, helping lead the baseball team to a state tournament appearance as a senior.

He stayed in Marietta for college, playing baseball for legendary coach Don Schaly, also an MOV Hall of Famer. Shuler helped lead the Pioneers to the Division III World Series four straight years, winning the title in 1981 and 1983. He was a three-year starter, playing shortstop and outfield.

Shuler also played one season of football at Marietta College, starting at quarterback as a freshman and setting several school passing records.

SHANE SMITH,

WOOD COUNTY

Smith graduated from Williamstown in 2004. He did it all for the Yellowjackets, earning all-state honors three times in football and baseball, winning three state titles in wrestling and two state titles in track.

In 2003, Smith was named West Virginia’s Most Outstanding Wrestler and played a role in the ‘Jackets’ state track championships in 2003 and 2004.

In 2004, Smith was named the Parkersburg Elks Club Athlete of the Year.

He went on to play college baseball at Potomac State from 2004 to 2006 and then West Virginia University from 2006 to 2007.
