Marietta girls golf, Warren’s Seth Dennis on to state

ZANESVILLE — The Marietta girls golf team claimed the Division I East/Southeast District championship Monday at EagleSticks Golf Club.

With the win, the Tigers punched their ticket to the Division I state tournament in Columbus on Oct. 23 and 24.

Marietta scored 360 as a team, besting runner-up John Glenn by four strokes. Miami Trace came in third, 373), Logan placed fourth (378) and Dover finished fifth (411).

Freshman Saylor Wharff led the Tigers with a round of 77, the third highest score of the tournament. Sophomore Trista Stanley carded an 87 for Marietta followed by senior Paige Hartley’s 96 and senior Makayla Welch’s 100 to form the Tigers’ team score. Senior Addi Herb also carded a 105 for Randee Seevers-coached MHS.

Warren’s Hollis Sturgill competed in the district tournament as an individual and had an impressive showing, scoring 37 on the front 9 and 43 on the back for a round of 80. She placed tied for fifth as an individual to finish her sophomore season on a high note.

The boys district championship was held Tuesday, also at EagleSticks, with Warren senior Seth Dennis earning a state berth as an individual.

The boys’ race to state was a tight one. Tri-Valley claimed the team title with a score 316, four strokes better than Marietta’s 320. Warren came in third at 330.

The best scoring individual not on Tri-Valley got to advance to state. Dennis won that battle with a score of 73, edging out Marietta’s J.B. Wharff (74) and A.J. Graham (75).

Dennis trailed the Tiger duo after the front 9. He scored a 37 to Graham’s 34 and Wharff’s 35, but Dennis had strong showing on the back 9, scoring a 36 to to finish second overall to Tri-Valley’s Drew Johnson (69).

Marietta, coached by Bryan Whittekind, also got an 83 from Grayson Herb and an 88 from Eli Gardner to form their team score. Logan Offenberger added a 92.

Nathan Evans-coached Warren got an 85 from Chance Weihl and 86s from Caleb Davis and Edward Kehl in addition to Dennis’ score. Nathan Heft also came in with a 97.
