VINCENT — Second-year Warren High School head wrestling coach Jeff Parsons is ready to get the season underway.

That officially will occur starting at 9 a.m. Saturday when the Warriors welcome a strong field to town for the Hickory Grove Invitational.

The Warriors, who were supposed to open Wednesday night, are led by tri-captains Cole Coleman (120) and Peyten Keller (152), both seniors, along with sophomore 106-pounder Hayley Snyder.

Gallia Academy was slated to be the Warriors’ dual opponent and also make a return trip on Saturday, but they’ve been shut down due to COVID-19.

That opening was quickly filled by Fairland, which will join the host Warriors along with Fort Frye, Jackson, Marietta, Meadowbrook, Meigs, Morgan, New Lexington, Shenandoah, Waterford and Waverly in the pool style tournament.

“Everybody is looking for tournaments with everything getting shut down and cancelled,” said Parsons, who added of Saturday “in a pool tournament every person will get to wrestle five times instead of going two and out.

“It will be dual meet scoring so six points for a pin, five for a technical fall and so on and the placement points, first through fourth, go toward the team score.”

Kellar, who is top-ranked at 152 but will compete at 160 on Saturday, was 48-0 last year and a district champion when the state championships were called off. He’s three wins shy of 150 for his career against just 10 losses.

Coleman is locked in and ready to go at 120 and the coach noted “Cole has worked really hard all summer to achieve his goal of making it to the state tournament.

“He has found ways to work out and wrestle all summer. He has a career record of 87-53 and he is also on the hunt to hit 100 career wins early in the season.”

Coach Parsons added of Snyder that she’s “coming off an impressive freshman year with a record of 24-19 and most of those matches were against the boys.

“Hayley is also the 2020 girls state champion where she went undefeated in her title run and beat the number one ranked girl. We are expecting even more from her since she didn’t miss a weight lifting session this summer.”

Expected to join Coleman and Kellar in Saturday’s starting lineup are fellow 12th-graders Hayden Wiggers (138), Cole Hupp (170), Brayden Gerber (182), Austin Carpenter (195), Dylan Keife (220) and heavyweight Jake Welch, who was 30-18 last winter.

Juniors Ethan Johnson (145) and Brodie Tait, who will compete at 152, will comprise the remainder of the ‘A’ lineup along with freshmen Clay Carpenter (113), Jacob Berg (126) and Mitchel Rehl (132).

“I think we’ll be a top three team. I don’t know if we can win this,” admitted coach Parsons, who also will have JT Rice (170/182, JR), Hunter Vincent (220, SO), Kaylee Tait (145, FR) and Ethan Berg (170/182, FR) competing Saturday on the varsity ‘B’ team while James Lively (126, SO) and Carson Gandee (152, FR) are currently sidelined.

“We’ve got some good teams coming. Shenandoah and New Lexington will bring very competitive teams and Jackson will bring a very competitive team and they got 27 kids out this year. We should be in the running for the top three. If our seniors hold out and do a good job we can be right up there.”

* Waterford head coach Greg Offenberger’s Wildcats won their own invite last weekend. WHS finished with 249 points in the eight-team field with Marietta (102), Fort Frye (95) and Meigs (47) placing sixth through eighth.

The Wildcats have three champs in Ethan Beardmore (132), Lane Cline (152) and Tyson Moore (160). Haden Offenberger (170) and Ethan Root (220) finished runner-up and Coen Wagner (145) placed third.
