Adam Coil leads Marietta past Waterford, 10-0
Marietta senior Adam Coil threw five innings of one-hit baseball and delivered a bases loaded double as the Tigers scored early and often in a 10-0 route of the Waterford Wildcats at Legion Field.
The Tigers got things going in the first inning as lead off batter Mark Duckworth was hit by a pitch. Two outs later, Donovan Wheeler singled and Ethan Clark singled home Duckworth to make it 1-0. Chandler Goddard followed with a hard hit double to left center to plate two runs and give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
“We are telling the kids to hit strikes and to be aggressive,” said Tiger coach Josh McKitrick. “Tonight we hit the ball hard and it is nice to see all those 2 out hits.”
The Tigers added four more runs in the second as Bryson Chavez singled, Duckworth doubled to left center, Coil was hit by a pitch, then Wheeler and Clark both singled to make it 7-0. Marietta put the game away in the third as Jonah Emery laced a one out single to left and Chavez followed with a single up the middle. Duckworth hit into a fielders choice, then Josh Martin singled to load the bases and set the stage for Coil. The Tiger senior jumped on the first pitch and drove it hard to right center to put the Tigers up 10-0.
Coil worked out of early trouble and settled down nicely as the game progressed. He commanded his curveball and struck out nine batters in five innings, allowing only an infield single to Jacob Huffman.
“Adam got the job done tonight. Only one infield hit and it fell between three fielders”, said McKitrick. “We need the kids to stay loose and aggressive at the plate as we move along through the season. We are improving and making progress.”
Marietta improved to 4-3 and will travel to Cambridge to face the Bobcats Wednesday at Don Coss Field.
