Marietta College softball rocks John Carroll in twinbill
Marietta College swept an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from John Carroll Friday. The Pioneers took the first game by the score of 5-2 and then posted a 13-1 win in five innings in the second game.
Marietta improved to 5-9 overall and 5-9 in the OAC. John Carroll fell to 4-11 on the season and 4-9 in the OAC.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first game with a run in the first and two more in the second inning. Maicy Kirk led off with a walk and was sacrificed into scoring position by Taylor Watts. Kaitlyn Carpenter followed with an RBI single up the middle scoring Kirk with the first run of the game.
Jordan Pallay got things started in the second inning when she received a one-out walk. Hailey Maher bunted Pallay over to second and scored when the Blue Streak left fielder misplayed a ball off the bat of Micaela Bradley. Kirk drove in Bradley with a base hit to right center.
Marietta extended its lead to 5-0 with two more runs in the fourth. Jess Brown smacked an RBI single that score Watts, who reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second. Brown later scored on a wild pitch.
John Carroll finally got to Marietta starting pitcher Maddi Liston in the sixth inning. Crista Nativio walked and then Gracie Bressoud doubled giving the Blue Streaks runners at second and third with one out. Kasyn Scarantine grounded out to the shortstop plating Nativio and moving Bressoud to third. Emma Gurley followed with an RBI single scoring Bressoud.
Liston (3-2) went the distance in the circle for the Pioneers scattering three hits in 7.0 innings of work. She allowed two runs, walked three and struck out one.
Katie DeBord (3-6) took the loss for JCU. DeBord started and pitched 3.0 innings giving up three runs, one earned, on five hits. She walked three and struck out one. Madison Eagle and Danielle Orendi both threw in relief for the Blue Streaks.
Marietta smashed four home runs in the game two victory collecting 17 hits in the game. The Pioneers scored four runs in the second and then exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning.
Kylie Daugherty got the home run parade started with a two-run blast to left center in the second inning. Pallay and Kirk added RBI singles in the frame for a 4-0 Pioneer lead.
Watts drove in three runs with an inside the park home run in the fourth. Anna Swierczewski drilled a two-run bomb to right center and Maher added a solo shot to center field.
Daugherty capped the Pioneer scoring with a run scoring single in the fifth inning.
Kirk, Brown and Daugherty each had three hits in the game. Watts drove in three runs and Daugherty knocked in four. Watts, Swierczewski and Maher had two hits apiece.
Airyanna Maurer (1-1) got the win for Marietta. Maurer worked 2.2 innings and allowed one run on one hit. Ashton Helmke gave up one hit and no runs in 2.1 innings of work.
DeBord (3-7) took the loss. She threw 3.0 innings and allowed four runs on six hits. Eagle gave up six runs in 0.1 innings, while Orendi allowed three runs in 1.2 innings.
Marietta hosts John Carroll again on Saturday. The OAC doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
