Warren baseball explodes in 6th for 12-3 win over Marietta

The score was tied 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning at Legion Field on Friday night when the Warren Warriors sent 14 batters to the plate and scored nine runs en route to a 12-3 victory to sweep the season series from Marietta.

The Warriors got on the board in the first inning off Tiger starter Malachi Morton as Evan Gandee got the first of his four hits. Seth Dennis drew a walk and two outs later, Derek McAfee singled to left to make it 2-0 Warren. The blue and white added another run in the second as Gandee singled, Dennis walked and Kurt Taylor singled and it was 3-0 Warriors. Warren missed out on blowing the game wide open early as they left the bases loaded in each of the first three innings and left 13 runners on base in the game.

Marietta tied the game in the third off Warren starter Caleb Davis as Mark Duckworth drew a two-out walk. Josh Martin walked and Donovan Wheeler singled to right center. After an Ethan Clark walk, Trey Brown singled and the game was even at 3-3. Morton set the Warriors down in order in the fourth and fifth before getting into major trouble in the sixth. Gandee, Dennis, Taylor and Hunter Vincent all singled to start the inning. After a fly out by McAfee, Davis laid down a perfect bunt single, Scott Reynolds singled, and Brayden Gerber was hit by a pitch and the route was on as Gandee hit a bases clearing triple into the right field corner.The Warriors ended the inning with a 12-3 lead.

Taylor relieved Davis on the mound and shut the Tigers down the final three innings, striking out four and giving up one hit. The Warriors improved to 11-7 and Marietta fell to 6-6. The Tigers take on Wheelersburg Saturday at Veterans Stadium in Chillicothe.
