Cadets, Tigers, Golden Eagles claim league titles

BELMONT– For the second straight season, the Fort Frye volleyball team has won the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference 3A championship.

The Cadets (20-2) defeated Shenandoah in four sets by scores of 25-17, 25-27, 25-22 and 25-11 Saturday at Union Local High School to claim the trophy.

Fort Frye swept Barnesville in the OVAC semifinals on Tuesday, and now will turn its attention to the sectional tournament, which begins Monday in Beverly. Fort Frye is the No. 2 seed in the East District.

Tiger girls win ECOL crown

CAMBRIDGE — The Marietta girls cross country team won the East Central Ohio League championship Saturday.

Ava Gebczyk was the individual runner-up, crossing the finish line in 21 minutes, 1 second. Teammate Tatum Clark was two spots behind in fourth, clocking in at 22:23. Elizabeth Loughry also notched a top-10 finish for MHS, placing 10th at 22:55. Mahlen Becker (13th; 23:08) and Lynncoln Tynan (14th; 23:15) also scored for the champion Tigers, who defeated runner-up New Philadelphia 43-52.

Coming in third with 55 points was Warren, which was led by Grace Randall’s third-place finish (21:56). Jordyn Taylor (5th; 22:24) and Maggie Reynolds (7th; 22:29) also finished in the top 10. Lily Herriott came in 19th (24:29) while Allison Rehl was 22nd (24:54) for the Warriors.

Warren came in third place in the boys standings. Bryson Angelo was the Warriors’ top finisher, placing third at 17:31. Andrew Vincent came in eighth at 18:07 followed by Aiden Westerman in 12th (18:27), Brennan Perdue in 14th (18:36) and Ben Bishop in 26th (20:18).

The Marietta boys placed fifth out of five teams, but had a pair of top-10 finishers in Ezra Minard (2nd; 16:51) and Kasy Science (9th; 18:16). Rounding out the Tigers’ scoring were Isaac Lough (17th; 19:10), Evan Masselli (23rd; 19:59) and Quentin Pichon-Amblard (24th; 20:00).

Belpre boys take TVC title

STEWART — Belpre left Saturday’s Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division cross country championship with the boys team title, defeating runner-up Waterford 35-41.

Nick Diaz placed fourth at 17:50, Carter Norman was fifth at 17:55, Johnny Miller was seventh at 18:08, Austin Jenkins was 12th at 19:18 and Evan Vowls was 18th at 20:35.

Waterford was led by Dylan Hartline’s eighth-place finish. He crossed the finish line in 18:14. Troy Gibson was ninth at 18:33, Jarrett Armstrong was 10th at 18;35, Chase Schott was 11th at 19:01 and Brenner Schwendeman was 14th at 19:49.

Federal Hocking claimed the girls championship led by Rosemary Stephens’ first-place finish. She led the pack at 20:42 followed by Piper Biesinger (5th; 22:27), Emma Lucas (6th; 22:53), Olivia Amlin (8th; 24:30) and Sage Helon (16th; 27:20).

Waterford girls had four individuals in the race — Averi Schwendeman was the runner-up at 20:55, Kaylor Offenberger was fourth at 21:56, Emma Hartline was 18th at 27:25 and Elaina Hamrick was 19th at 28:29.

The Belpre girls had three — Maddie Sprigg in seventh at 23:18, Nikki Gogan in ninth at 24:39 and Trista Harpold in 14th at 26:56.
