Tigers’ AJ Graham qualifies for state golf tournament

ZANESVILLE — Marietta junior golfer AJ Graham is headed to the state golf tournament.

Graham was the Division I East/Southeast District runner-up Tuesday at EagleSticks Golf Club. He carded a 76, one stroke behind district champion Shad Kenily of New Philadelphia. Because New Philadelphia also won the team title, Graham, the top individual not on the winning team, earned a state tournament berth.

Bryan Whittekind-coached Marietta finished runner-up as a team, scoring 319, seven strokes behind the Quakers’ 312. Dover (326) was third, West Holmes (330) was fourth and Warren (343) rounded out the top five.

Grayson Herb was Marietta’s next best finisher, carding an 80 to finish tied for ninth. Liam Ritter (81) was tied for 13th while Aidan Herb (82) was tied for 15th. The Tigers also saw Logan Offenberger score 89 to tie for 31st.

Nathan Evans-coached Warren was led by Caleb Davis’s 78, tying him for third overall. Edward Kehl (86) was tied for 24th, Nathan Heft (89) was tied for 31st, John Wharton (90) was tied for 35th and Cole Hungate (91) came in 39th.

Graham will compete in the state tournament on Oct. 22 and 23 on Ohio State’s Scarlet Course in Columbus.

The Marietta and Warren girls competed in district golf action on Monday, also at EagleSticks.

The Warren girls placed fourth as a team, scoring 365 to finish behind first-place John Glenn (326), runner-up Miami Trace (339) and third-place Dover 364).

Skyler Radabaugh was the top finisher for the Andy Biddinger-coached Warriors, carding an 88 to finish 12th. Hollis Sturgill and Jilliann Stemple both came in at 91 to tie for 14th. Clara Pettit was 21st with a 95 while Carly McCutcheon was a stroke behind at 96 to finish tied for 22nd.

Marietta’s Saylor Wharff was the line Tiger competing. She finished tied for sixth, shooting an 83.

New Philly’s Sydney Devore (69) was the top overall finisher and earned a state berth.
