Washington County girls compete in Buckeye State Battlegrounds

The Washington County girls basketball team competed in the second annual Buckeye State Battlegrounds on Friday at the College of Wooster.

A year ago, the Chris Murray-led squad won the inaugural event and this year the team reached the semifinals before falling 47-45 in overtime to Mahoning. The team, led by new first-year Belpre girls head coach Chris Fennell, went 2-1 in pool play with victories against Columbiana (47-33) and Portage (53-30) along with a 61-46 setback to Fairfield. Warren’s Alex Frazee led the team in scoring during the event with 72 points. Also providing point-production were Waterford’s Avery Wagner (42), Marietta’s Riley Medley (35) and Leigha Lauer (21), Fort Frye’s Kianna O’Brien (19), Frontier’s Grace Knowlton (15), Belpre’s Haley Alloway (14) and Julia Way (14) as well as the Warrior Madison Lynn (13).
