VANDALIA, Ohio — Warren’s 2024 postseason run came to a close Thursday evening in a three-set loss to Roger Bacon in the state semifinals at Butler High School.

The Spartans won by scores of 25-20, 25-22 and 25-9 to advance to Saturday’s Division IV state championship match against either Shelby or Marlington at Wright State.

Warren’s season came to an end after the program claimed its first ever regional championship and first district title since 1999. The Warriors finished 23-3.

Madyson Long led the Warriors with 15 kills and 21 digs. Sydney Starcher added six kills while Elayna Greenwalt chipped in three kills and two aces. Payge Cornell tallied 25 assists.

The Spartans led 23-17 in the first set, but three straight errors allowed Warren to get within three. RBHS called timeout and won the final two points as Hoffman’s kill closed it out.

Long netted eight of her kills in the opening set for Warren.

The Warriors took a 10-9 advantage in the second set on Greenwalt’s ace and stretched the lead to 13-10 on Long’s kill. Roger Bacon rallied and held a 22-20 lead before back-to-back kills by Starcher tied it up. Jackson and Sunderman recorded kills to put the Spartans up two before an attack error by Warren gave RBHS a 2-0 advantage in the match.

The third set was all Spartans as they bolted out to a 13-5 lead. It was 24-7 when Long’s kill and Greenwalt’s ace momentarily kept hope alive, but Hoffman capped it off with a kill to secure the sweep.
