Roundup: Warren stuns Minford, 71-69
PORTSMOUTH — Five days after scoring a career-high 34 points in Warren’s win against Marietta, Julian Stadelman scored 34 again in a massive 71-69 victory over previously unbeaten Minford Saturday at Shawnee State’s Buckeye Elite Basketball Showcase.
However, Stadelman’s biggest contribution was a pass he made in the final seconds.
Tied at 69-all and time winding down, the Warren point guard drove to the paint. As the entire Minford defense collapsed, Stadelman found teammate Nick Cressey wide open underneath the hoop. Cressey laid a shot up off the glass and in with .3 seconds remaining to give the Warriors the win.
“I just want to thank the Warren fans who made the long trip down,” said Warren head coach Blane Maddox, whose team improved to 10-2 with a trip to Morgan slated for Tuesday. “I’m glad we got to treat them to a huge victory. I’m proud of our team and can’t wait to get back in action next week.”
Warren led 22-17 after the first and 38-32 at halftime, but watched the Falcons (9-1) go ahead 57-56 by the end of the third. The Warriors outscored their opponents, who were the top-rated Division V team in the district, 15-12 over the final eight minutes.
Stadelman made 13 field goals, including four 3-pointers. Connor Barry added 12 points while Chase Lupardus chipped in 11 for the Warren.
“Julian had one outstanding game,” Maddox said. “We were in terrible foul trouble early, three guys with two or three fouls in the first half. The bench did an awesome job. It was a great team win. Julian had the 34 points, but he also dishes, assists — he did everything for us.”
Only three players scored for Minford. Bennett Kayser led the way with 34 points while Myles Montgomery added 26. Jackson Shoemaker tallied nine to round it out.
“Minford is just a very, very good basketball team,” Maddox said. “Those three are dynamite. We were just fortunate no one else chipped in.”
The game was an instant classic, but unfortunately…
“The problem is, one of the best games in our history is not on film,” Maddox lamented. “Our film guy was out sick and neither Minford or Shawnee State filmed it, so the game’s not on film. I’m sick about it, but what a great game. The people who paid six bucks to get in and watch, what a bargain.”
