Williamstown falls to Tug Valley in Willie Akers Classic

LOGAN, W.Va. — Parker Schramm drained nine treys en route to a game-high 27 points here Friday night in the Willie Akers Classic, but it wasn’t enough as Class AA, No. 2 Williamstown lost to defending Class A state champion Tug Valley, 77-64.

Cruz Isaly, who finished with 17 points and had all six of the Yellowjackets’ free-throw attempts, had a steal under the basket and lay-in which put Williamstown on the scoreboard first, but it proved to be the only lead of the game.

The Panthers, who improved to 5-2 and are ranked second in Class A, proceeded to go on an 11-0 spurt that was capped by a Kaden Hale 3 for an 11-2 advantage just three minutes in.

Schramm hit a trio of triples in the first, including a trey with 59 seconds to go which made it 19-16, but Tug Valley answered with a triple from Ashton Davis to grab a 22-16 edge and another Hale 3 pushed it to 25-16 after one.

The first points of the second quarter didn’t come until the 5:50 mark when Hale hit from beyond the arc again to put the ‘Jackets down a dozen, which was the largest lead for Tug Valley in the first half.

Williamstown cut it to five at 32-27 with 30 seconds left in the half thanks to a Jayden Bryant putback, but Carson Newsome rebounded his own miss and got the putback, which gave the Panthers a 34-27 intermission advantage.

The Yellowjackets of head coach Scott Sauro, who trailed 51-38 entering the fourth, finally cut the deficit back to single digits at 58-49 with 3:48 remaining following another Schramm trifecta along with a Bryant steal and layup but couldn’t get any closer.

Bryant finished with 13 points for the ‘Jackets, who slipped to 4-2 and play Logan at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Hale paced the Panthers (5-2) with 19 points while Braydun Ferris added 18, Carson Newsome chipped in 16 and Bryson Elia netted 10.
