VINCENT — Warren pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the second inning here Tuesday evening against Meigs and that was more than enough for Tate Jonas as the sophomore right-hander fired a 105-pitch no-hitter in his second career start as the Warriors won their home opener, 3-0.

The youthful Warriors, now 1-1 with a Thursday tilt up next at Point Pleasant for a Twin State League showdown, tacked on an insurance run in the fifth when leadoff hitter Braylen Murray coaxed a four-pitch free pass from losing pitcher Ashton Newsome and crossed on Haiden Strong’s run-scoring knock to right.

Tate’s first task in the seventh was taking care of cleanup hitter Braden Hawley, who popped up in foul ground to first baseman Jayce Hilverding. Marauder third baseman Brodie Fackler followed and mashed a shot into center field, but Murray was able to track it down following a long run as he made a fully-extended catch above his head with his back to the infield.

Jonas, who actually sacrificed Murray to second in the fifth before catcher Brandon Cline singled and Strong made it 3-0, lifted his arms enthusiastically above his head following the grab.

“That ball was smoked, but he picked me up though,” Jonas said of Murray as shortstop Jake Sealey gobbled up a shot off the bat of Isaiah Arms in the hole and fired it across the diamond to beat him by a step and complete the no-hitter. “That was just unbelievable.

“I just couldn’t have done it without my teammates. They picked me up all the way through. I changed my approach. I would get down on myself and then I battled back and I think that’s what carried me through. I just had to put my trust in God and he’ll get me through it. It’s just awesome.”

Jonas issued a pair of free passes and had seven strikeouts. Fackler appeared to have been plunked in the second, but it was eventually determined to be ball four.

Addison Whitlach drew a two-out base on balls in the third.

“That was great,” WHS skipper Chad Porter said of the no-no and bouncing back from a 10-3 season-opening setback at Caldwell. “We’re very young. I think four freshmen, three sophomores, two seniors and a junior in that lineup.

“We were a completely different team today. Kind of imploded on Saturday. They just came out locked in ready to go and Tate obviously competed the whole day. I think he got better and better as the day went. I felt like he got stronger from pitch 50 to like pitch 100.”

Meigs No. 8 hitter Chase Dodson struck out to open the third, but reached on a wild pitch and moved to second following a sacrifice bunt by Lincoln Thomas. Jonas fanned Brice Butcher for the second out and then walked Whitlatch before No. 3 hitter Jake Martin fouled out to Cline.

Jonas ended up retiring the final 13 batters he faced.

“What a play. What a play,” said coach Porter of Murray’s leather work for the 26th out.

“That’s all you can say and defensively we played really clean.”

Newsome issued a walk to Cline to open the second and the bases were loaded after Strong and Hilverding sacrificed, but got on via errors.

Although Bo Jonas went down swinging and third baseman Al Winters popped up, No. 9 hitter Jacob Stauffer got an RBI hit by pitch before Murray followed with a run-scoring single to right.

“We were able to apply pressure with the bunting. The bunting game was great today and then we hit the ball very hard. A couple of those line drives if they are ground balls we probably score a couple more runs. Just really, really pleased and we have to build off this,” said Porter, who added of Winters recording five assists at the hot corner “he did a great job. He’s been there in practice a little bit, but today was his first start over there. We’ve kind of moved him around all over the place.”

Meigs, which slipped to 1-2 for head man Patrick Martin, welcomes Nelsonville-York to town for a 5 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday.
