Quite the success for ’Jackets, PHS at regional tennis

MORGANTOWN – The Williamstown tennis program continued its impressive week during the Class AA/A, Region 2 tennis tournament.

Following team titles by both the boys and girls teams earlier in the week, the Yellowjackets followed up on Tuesday by securing a pair of individual singles champions.

On the boys side, No. 1 seed Brady Woodard defeated teammate and No. 2-seeded Gavin Hill in the finals.

In the girls division, a pair of local freshmen met with No. 1 seed Addison Woodburn defeating second-seeded Ellie Piatt from Wood County Christian 8-4 in the championship match.

The loss marked Piatt’s first in 13 singles matches this season.

The top four placewinners in each division advance to next week’s state tournament.

In the semifinals, Woodard defeated No. 5 seed Lian Mung from Moorefield, 8-0, while Hill defeated No. 6 seed Hunter Mongold from Moorefield, 8-4.

In the girls semifinal round, Woodburn defeated No. 4 seeded McKenzie White from Lincoln, while Piatt defeated No. 6 seed Catherine Street from Trinity.

The tournament continues with doubles matches on Wednesday.

Class AAA, Region IV

Parkersburg High School’s tennis program made quite the statement in the team portion of the Class AAA, Region IV tournament held in Parkersburg.

PHS entered the team portion ranked No. 2 behind defending state champion Hurricane but the Big Reds pulled off a 4-3 upset in the finals.

Wins from Christian Marshall at No. 2 singles and Truman Roberts at No. 4 singles gave PHS a split, while the No. 2 doubles team of Alex and Christian Marshall along with the No. 3 doubles duo of Cale Stutler and Isaac Stephens pulled off wins of 8-6 and 8-3, respectively.

Joining their male counterparts in the finals were the PHS girls. In the semifinals, the Big Reds trailed Cabell Midland 3-2, but junior Emma Stanley won her No. 2 singles match in a come-from-behind 9-8 (7-3) victory. Sophomore Emmalee Pritchett, also had to rally to clinch her 9-8 (7-4) win at No. 4 singles and secure the team’s semifinal win

In the championship match, No. 1 seed Huntington defeated the PHS girls 4-1.

Both the PHS boys and girls advance to next week’s state tournament in the team duals format.
