Prep hoops roundup: Warren, Marietta win season openers
Warren 55, Gallia Academy 36
VINCENT — After missing all of last season, junior Aubrey Pepper returned to Warren’s lineup with a bang Friday night, leading the Warriors to a 55-36 season-opening win over Gallia Academy.
Pepper scored a game-high 20 points for Warren, which plays host to Athens Tuesday.
DeLaney Gates joined Pepper in double figures with 10 points. Jayda Murray added seven points while Juliana Huffman and Danica Gates chipped in six apiece.
The Warriors led 11-9 after a quarter and 24-21 at halftime, but outscored the Blue Devils 15-6 in the third period to take control.
Gallia was led by Chloe Bennett’s 11 points.
Marietta 48, Newcomerstown 41
NEWCOMERSTOWN — The Marietta Tigers won their season opener against Newcomerstown Friday night, 48-41, to give head coach Ali Shane the first victory of her career.
Freshman Blaire Reed led Marietta with 19 points in her first varsity game. She was 7 for 9 from the floor, including 4 for 5 from the 3-point line. Hayleigh Chdester went 8 for 10 from the free-throw line and added 13 points. Lauren Elliott chipped in seven points while Braxtyn Kroft contributed six points and a team-high 10 rebounds and two blocks. Fiona Fowler led the Tigers with three assists.
The Tigers are back in action Monday in their home opener against Meigs.
