Hoops roundup: Marietta boys, Fort Frye girls stay unbeaten

Marietta 71, Miami Valley 44

DAYTON — Coming off a hard fought win over rival Warren, the Marietta Tigers traveled three-plus hours to Dayton to take on Miami Valley, bringing home a 71-44 victory.

Four players scored in double figures as Marietta showed no signs of fatigue playing on back-to-back nights. Trey Hawkins finished with a game-high 19 points to go along with nine rebounds and five assists.

Logan Grosklos added 15 points, Owen Riley netted 12 points and three assists while Zaiden Wittekind chipped in 10 points. Keaton Mace dished out three dimes off the bench.

Tied at 19-all after one, the Tigers (3-0) outscored Miami Valley 19-6 in the second quarter. Marietta did not allow a point in the final 5 minutes and 13 seconds of the first half and pulled ahead for 38-25 halftime advantage.

The Tigers shot 42.4% (28 for 66) while the Rams, who committed 32 turnovers to Marietta’s 18, were 37.1% (13 for 35).

Paxton George and Ajitpal Gill scored 16 points apiece to lead MVHS, which got seven rebounds from Jedidiah Arogun and three assists from Gurnoor Dab.

The Tigers are off until Friday, when they visit Steubenville.

Girls

Fort Frye 58, Linsly 19

BEVERLY — Ella Dowler scored a game-high 21 points to lead Fort Frye to a 58-19 win over Linsly Saturday.

The host Cadets led 17-7 after one, 32-13 at halftime, 53-19 after three and did not allow a point in the fourth.

Rae Morgenstern and Elle Casto tallied 13 points apiece FFHS, which improved to 4-0 and play host to Newcomerstown Monday.

Nobody scored more than five points for Linsly, which fell to 0-2.

Lincoln 54, Ripley 29

SHINNSTON, W.Va. — Ripley struggled to get going offensively in a season-opening loss to Lincoln Friday, falling 54-29.

The Vikings, who were held to three points in the first eight minutes, were led by Kassidy Wilson’s 10 points. Bristol Smith added seven and Kyndyll Butler chipped in six.

Ripley trailed 7-3 after one, 23-13 at halftime and 41-23 after three.

The Cougars (1-0) got a game-high 18 points from Brystol Toth plus 10 from Gracey Fortney, nine from Ava McGill and six from Gabby Milner.

The Vikings will face Sissonville Wednesday in their home opener.

Morgan 59, River View 44

McCONNELSVILLE — Myleigh Williams scored seven straight points as part of a 15-0 second-quarter run that powered Morgan past River View 59-44 Saturday.

The Raiders (3-1), who travel to Marietta Monday, maintained a double-digit lead from there to claim the victory.

Williams and Myka Augenstein shared team-high points honors at 14 apiece. Gianna Myers added 11 for the Aaron Adams-coached squad, while Maya Davis chipped in eight.

River View (0-4) got a game-high 19 points from Elaine Brenly plus 10 each from Kortnee Mickle and Regan Foster.
