NEW MATAMORAS – At times it seemed like there was a lid on the basket for the Frontier Cougars Monday evening when they hosted the Shadyside Tigers at The Hank Morus Gymnasium.

The Lady Cougars could not buy a bucket early on and got themselves in a hole that they could never quite dig out of as Shadyside rolled to a 48-31 win.

Frontier made just 1-of-18 shots in the opening quarter and 3-of-25 in the first half as the Tigers built a 13-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 12-point margin at the break.

Getting the ball through the hoop has been a challenge so far in the 2025-26 season for the Cougars who lost for the second time in three games.

“We have really been struggling to try and find a groove on the offensive side of the court,” said Frontier head coach Mike Cisler. “If the ball doesn’t go in the hole it’s hard to put points up on the board.”

Both teams struggled to get the ball up the court in the second quarter as they combined for 17 turnovers but Shadyside managed to win the quarter by an 8-5 margin to take a 21-9 lead into the break.

The Tigers continued to add to their lead early in the third quarter as a 3-pointer by Layla Samsa and a two-pointer by Kasi Tsoras quickly increased their lead to 17.

Frontier needed a boost in the worst way and they found it in freshman Addison Edgar who knocked down a triple for the first Cougar bucket of the second half.

Senior Anna Bowersock followed with a two-pointer before Edgar completed an old-fashioned three-point play that quickly cut the deficit to single digits with plenty of time yet to play.

“I thought she came in off the bench and really provided us with a spark there in the second half,” said Cisler of Edgar, who finished the game with a team-high 10 points. “We just couldn’t get the stops at the right time and allowed them to go right back up by double-digits.”

The Tigers answered that 8-0 Cougar run with an 6-0 run of their own to extend their lead right back out to 15.

Frontier managed to get the lead down to 11 midway through the final quarter but that would be as close as they would get as Shadyside picked up their first win of the season.

Tsoras had a huge game for the winners as she tossed in a game-high 13 points, yanked down a game-high 14 rebounds and also came up with four steals and four assists.

Ali Weatherson added 12 points while Cameron Kolvec added nine.

Edgar was the only Cougar to reach double figures.

Cougar senior Kelsey Dye finished with nine points and 11 boards while Bowersock added seven.

Frontier (1-2) will look to right the ship Friday night when they take on Cameron at the ECO Center in Belmont.

“It’s early and we will keep working hard to kind of find that groove,” said Cisler, whose team will also host Bridgeport on Saturday. “Hopefully we can get things fixed.”
