No trouble for Tiger tennis vs. Zanesville

Marietta High hardly broke a sweat.

The Tigers tennis team improved its spring record to 8-5 overall with a 5-0 triumph over undermanned Zanesville High in East Central Ohio League action at the Glendale Courts Thursday.

“We only played the three singles matches today, and won the doubles competition by forfeit,” said MHS head coach Chris Mayer. “They (Blue Devils) normally have four (players) but one of them (Logan Dinan) was at some kind of robotics competition or something.

“The match probably lasted about an hour. When you don’t have to put the extra match on, it goes a little bit quicker there.Their numbers have been typically low the past few years, the last couple of years, anyway.”

Earlier this month on April 6, Marietta was scheduled to play Valencia Clark-coached ZHS on its court, but Mother Nature intervened.

“We went up there, and it rained when we’re getting ready to start the match, so we couldn’t get that one in,” Mayer said.

The weather was no problem on Thursday.

Senior Jack Hirschfield, and sophomores Eric Delong and Jacob Freeland all claimed singles victories for the Tigers.

Hirschfield defeated Leyton Needles, 6-3, 6-1 in first singles.

“Jack didn’t play particularly well today for whatever reason,” Mayer said. “Sometimes, you’re going to have bad days, but fortunately he still won.”

Neither Delong and Freeland dropped a game to their Blue Devil opponents.

Delong beat Dominic Zarba , 6-0, 6-0, in second singles.

“I kept him side to side,” Delong said. “And my serve was pretty good today, I guess.”

Freeland also won, 6-0, 6-0, against Aaron Ball, in third singles.

“He was good, but I was playing well today,” Freeland said. “My forehand was pretty nice today. My serve could’ve been better.”

In doubles, Marietta High’s first team of Jack Hu/Tyler Wise, and the second team of Mason Cline/Jackson Kelly each was credited with a victory.

Mayer said that MHS was having a good year on the tennis court.

“Overall it’s been a good season so far,” the coach added. “We’ve lost some close matches, so we could be better than what we are. Nobody’s blown us out. We’ve been in every match.”

The Tiger netters are currently 5-3 in the ECOL.

“The league (ECOL), from top to bottom, has been the most competitive that it’s been this year. There’s not a clear-cut standout top team like in the past few years. This year, it’s very, very competitive.”

Marietta is slated to play at Columbus Academy in a non-league match Monday.

“Next week, we have a couple of key matches in the league,” Mayer said. “We play New Philly on Wednesday and Cambridge on Friday. We’ve lost to both of those schools, so it’ll be tough. We’re hoping for a strong finish in the league.”
