Pioneers sweep Baldwin Wallace

BEREA – Marietta College stayed in the thick of the Ohio Athletic Conference softball race with a doubleheader sweep Thursday at Baldwin Wallace University. The Pioneers took game one, 13-1, in five innings and completed the sweep with a 3-2 victory in game two.

Marietta improves to 15-15 on the season and 5-5 in the OAC. The Yellow Jackets fall to 9-15 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

Sophomore Jocelyn White (5-6) was near perfect in the circle in the first game. White allowed just three Yellow Jackets to reach base, all in the fourth inning. She gave up one run on one hit and beaned one BW hitter.

While White was setting the Yellow Jackets down, the Marietta offense was clicking on all cylinders. The Pioneers scored four in the first inning and never looked back. Single runs in the third and fourth innings, followed by seven in the top of the fifth, resulted in MC’s second-highest scoring game of the season.

Rebekah Finn lined a triple down the right field line plating two runs in the first. Ariann Barile followed with a double driving in Finn.

Finn drove in her third run of the game with a single in the third inning. Brianna Finck got in on the action with a run-scoring single in the fourth.

Baldwin Wallace finally got a base runner in the bottom of the fourth when Abbie Thompson worked a one-out walk. Tori Young was hit by a pitch moving Thompson into scoring position. Nicole Fletterick broke up the no-hitter and the shutout with a single up the middle that knocked in Thmpson.

Marietta put the game out of reach in the fifth. The Pioneers sent 12 hitters to the plate in the seven-run rally. White helped her own cause with a three-run double, while Finn added her fourth RBI with a single to left center.

Finn finished 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and four RBIs. Finck and Brey Mays each scored twice and had three hits in the game. White drove in three runs and had a pair of doubles.

Erica Morgan took the loss for BW. She allowed six runs on nine hits in four innings of work. Sami Minor and Mackenzie Nelsen each threw in relief. In game two, Baldwin Wallace grabbed an early 1-0 lead. Erica English led off with a single, moved to second on a walk to Thompson and then went to third on a sac bunt from Fletterick. English scored on an RBI groundout by Alexis Boledovic. Rachel Montgomery hit a sac fly in the second inning that allowed Barile to score tying the game at 1-1. BW retook the lead in the fourth on an RBI double off the bat of Sierra Bennett.

Once again the Pioneers responded. Marietta tallied two runs in the top of the fifth for a 3-2 lead. Montgomery reached on a one-out single and scored when Stephanie Zentz doubled to left field. Zentz moved to third on a wild pitch and scored the go ahead run when Ali Prologo fouled out to left.

Kristina LaRocca (5-4) picked up the win for Marietta pitching six strong innings. She gave up two runs on five hits. Alison Kach notched her first save of the season with an inning of shutout relief.

Morgan (6-9) was tagged with her second loss of the day. She went the distance and gave up three runs on just six hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

The Pioneers host Heidelberg University Saturday for the eighth annual Community Day. Game one of the doubleheader is set to start at 1 p.m.
